Couple weeks ago I walked into our powder room, after I put our son to bed, and found this.
In case you are wondering, it’s our dog’s blanket stuffed inside the toilet. Not sure what she did to deserve it, but almost 5 year old thought it to be a fun thing to do. I shared this image on social media and lots of people asked me about the wallpaper. So I thought I’ll do a post about what I used for this bathroom and what I wish I’ve done differently, now that we have used it for about two years.
Powder rooms are something you want to look stylish and cool, because in a way they represent your home. On the other hand, these are probably the most often used bathrooms in the house, so they should be functional and easy to keep clean.
With stylish and cool in mind, I picked Hygge & West Underwater World wallpaper in gold. First of all, it is light and a tad shiny, which looks great in a small windowless bathroom. But more importantly, I like the design - it seems whimsical, every time you are in there, you seem to notice something new. I think it’s a great choice for a powder room ( we keep getting lots of compliments about it too).
Since wallpaper is bold and busy, I wanted to go with more muted vanity and mirror. Vanity came from Lowe’s. It is Schuler Cabinetry line with Princeton doors in Castle Rock Sheer color. To offset a slightly modern look of vanity, I went with brass and glass Vintage knobs from Restoration Hardware and white quartz countertop. Countertop is Stella White from MSI - I like little sparkly speckles it has. There are many varieties of white quartz by different manufacturers. It is man-made and super easy to maintain. This morning we got black Sharpie on white quartz countertop in our kitchen and it wiped off easily with some Goof Off. White marble would be much trickier to clean…
Wooden frame mirror is from Home Goods, but you can get similar from Wayfair or Pottery Barn. Either of them would look great.
The sconces are Hudson Valley Amherst in brass. I love how the brass with crystal accent ties in with RH knobs. The lights are really sophisticated, not too traditional or modern. However, they are also on pricey side at $290 each. You can always find similar and spend less. This one from Lamps Plus would be a good choice. While it doesn’t have crystal detail, I like the cylindrical shape of the shade. Another good option is this Samui sconce from Tila Homes - again, I like the shape of the shade and the fact that it is made from glass.
This brings me to the floor - I picked gorgeous white thassos marble subway tile and we had it installed in chevron pattern. It looks so great but it is SOOO impractical (especially if you have small boys at home). It probably requires a whole separate post…
